In an era of rapidly developing technology, competition, and escalating costs, the need for small business educational guidance has become paramount to both a company’s and an individual’s economic survival. During the past few years, the business community has been involved in an uncertain climate due to questionable financial practices. There has also been a lack of understanding and education among college graduated accountants, bookkeepers, and business owners. With the current complexity of financial reporting, it is imperative for business owners and financial executives to find the proper tools to assist them. One of the most significant tools is, by far, a business’ employees and their education. Gateway to Learning can facilitate the continuing education necessary for both a company and an individual’s growth. As an employee increases their knowledge base though education, they become a more valuable resource to the company and they also improve their self image with added confidence. Our Learning Center will provide the educational guidance for both the accounting professional, bookkeeping staff, and high school graduate. Gateway to Learning is a private secondary educational facility whose main focus is to provide accounting and bookkeeping education, together with software training, that is relevant to the job market, not only today but tomorrow. It was conceived by Sasha Larson, Lisa Luke, and Pana L. Boxx. The three founders wanted to provide a practical education that could not be obtained through a college or business school. Gateway to Learning’s coursework is based on actual job tasks and assignments, which include both accounting theory and, more importantly, actual job experience. The student is prepared with “the tools of the trade” to fill an actual job position. This is much different from a traditional accounting class where theory is the main ingredient. Gateway to Learning coursework is “geared” to individuals who are currently working, those who are in the process of obtaining employment, and those graduating from high school who would like job experience before continuing to college. Our curriculum does not replace a college education but instead offers the individual an opportunity for employment experience to compliment it. Gateway to Learning goes a step beyond traditional schools by assisting students with internships and employment placement through partnerships with employment services throughout the Salt Lake Valley. The Learning Center has a networking and support group, comprised of current and former students. The group meets monthly where a learning concept or topic of discussion is presented by guest speakers to expand current accounting theory or to provide additional relevant business and accounting information and experience. |
